Bandera, the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” is a small county-seat town on the Medina River, surrounded by ranches and acreage. Groundwater and Drought Rules
The City of Bandera pumps from the lower Trinity Aquifer, and most properties outside town have private wells. Both fall under the Bandera County River Authority & Groundwater District (BCRAGD), and the city says it follows BCRAGD’s drought plan.
- BCRAGD listed the county in Moderate Drought as of mid-October 2026. Its plan for that level limits landscape irrigation to before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m.
- At more severe levels, irrigation drops to every other day, then once a week, and at the most severe level stops entirely.
- The city changed stages several times in 2026, and the council has been revising its ordinance to line up with county stages. Check with the city and BCRAGD before you program a controller.
Designing for Wells
The Trinity Aquifer under Bandera County has been declining under growing demand, and BCRAGD has limited new non-exempt well permits. A system on a well should:
- Be zoned to the well’s real flow rate, so the pump isn’t overworked.
- Run at night, inside the allowed hours.
- Put beds, trees and gardens on drip.
- Be checked for leaks every season, because a leak on a well can drain a pressure tank and wear out a pump.
Hill Country and River Ground
Bandera County soils are generally shallow and alkaline over limestone, with deeper ground along the Medina. Live oak, cedar and pecan are everywhere. We route lines around tree roots and use slow nozzles so water soaks into thin soil.
